Privacy and cookies
Carlidate helps UK used-car buyers understand a vehicle's MOT history before they buy. This page explains what we collect, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. Questions: hello@carlidate.co.uk.
Checking a vehicle
When you enter a registration we look the vehicle up in the official MOT history record (data published by DVSA under the Open Government Licence) and use an AI service (Anthropic) to turn that history into a plain-English read. The registration and its MOT history describe the vehicle, not you, and you can check a car without giving us any personal details.
Buying an inspection
Payments are handled entirely by Stripe on their secure checkout page; your card details never touch our servers. From Stripe we receive your email address and payment status, which we keep so we can give you access to what you bought (via a private link emailed to you by our email provider, Resend), handle refunds, and meet our accounting obligations.
If you arrived from one of our adverts, we also record which campaign the visit came from (the tags in the link you clicked, such as utm_campaign) alongside the purchase. This tells us which adverts pay for themselves. It is held briefly in your browser's session storage during your visit and stored with the purchase on our servers.
Analytics and cookies
We use PostHog, hosted in the EU, to understand how visitors move through the product: which pages are viewed, where people drop off, and whether features work. Until you accept analytics in the cookie banner, this runs without storing anything on your device. If you accept, PostHog sets a first-party cookie so your steps join up into one journey, and may record a replay of how free pages are used (never pages containing your private links or email). We do not use advertising cookies and we do not sell data.
Storage we use: carlidate_consent (remembers your cookie choice), carlidate_attribution (session storage, which advert brought you here, cleared when the tab closes), and, only if you accept analytics, PostHog's first-party cookie. You can change your mind any time by clearing this site's cookies and site data in your browser.
Who we share data with
Stripe (payments), Resend (transactional email), PostHog EU (analytics), Anthropic (AI interpretation of MOT history), and our hosting and database providers. Each processes data on our behalf to run the service. We never share your email address for marketing.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@carlidate.co.uk and we will act on it promptly. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
